Why doing nothing is good for you is a question that challenges one of modern life’s biggest assumptions—that every moment needs to be productive. For years, doing nothing has carried a sense of guilt. It’s what people apologize for after a quiet weekend or a slow afternoon, often feeling they should have accomplished more. But growing evidence from neuroscience and psychology suggests that periods of unstructured, purposeful rest aren’t wasted time at all. The clearest entry point into this idea is a Dutch concept called niksen, which translates roughly to “nothinging” — the deliberate act of doing nothing without a goal, an outcome, or a productivity payoff attached to it.

This is an important distinction, because niksen isn’t the same as relaxing on purpose, like reading a book to unwind or doing a guided meditation with a specific technique. Niksen is sitting and staring out a window. It’s letting your mind drift while waiting for a kettle to boil. It’s the unstructured, aimless idleness that most of us have been trained to feel a little guilty about.

For a long time, niksen was dismissed even within Dutch culture as a sign of laziness rather than something worth taking seriously. That’s changed. The activity, or rather the lack of one, has to be genuinely unstructured and free of an external input competing for your attention for the default mode network to fully engage.

Because the default mode network is involved in connecting and integrating information in the background, deliberately giving your brain unfocused time appears to enhance cognitive flexibility and idea generation in ways that staying continuously task-focused does not allow for.

The self-reflective function of the default mode network gives the brain space to process emotional experiences and consolidate memory in ways that constant external stimulation interrupts. How to Actually Practice This Without It Feeling Forced

If the idea of scheduling “nothing” sounds a little absurd, that reaction is itself revealing — it shows how deeply busyness has been normalized as the default state. A few practical entry points make this easier to actually try.

Start smaller than feels meaningful. Five to ten minutes of genuinely unstructured time — sitting by a window, waiting for coffee to brew without checking your phone, walking without a podcast — is enough to begin engaging the default mode network. This isn’t a half-day retreat commitment.

Remove the input, not just the task. The key variable in the research isn’t being physically still, it’s the absence of external stimulation competing for your attention. Sitting still while watching a screen doesn’t count. Walking without anything playing in your ears does.

Expect some discomfort at first. If your nervous system has been running in a chronically “on” state, the early minutes of unstructured rest can feel restless or even slightly anxious before they feel calming. Researchers studying this transition note that the urge to immediately fill the silence with a task or your phone is common and worth sitting through rather than immediately resolving.

Burnout has moved from an individual complaint to something tracked, surveyed, and reported on at a global scale, and wellness researchers heading into 2026 have specifically pointed to rest and recovery becoming foundational rather than optional, citing it as core to metabolic health, emotional balance, and resilience rather than simply a nice-to-have.

That framing is part of what separates this trend from a typical wellness fad. It isn’t selling a product, a device, or a subscription. The entire practice is the removal of stimulation, not the addition of anything. In a wellness market that frequently profits from selling you another tool, another supplement, or another app, “do less and buy nothing” is an unusually low-cost, low-risk recommendation — which may be part of why, after years of being dismissed, it’s finally being taken seriously.

Doing nothing was never actually nothing. It activates a specific, well-documented brain network responsible for self-reflection, emotional processing, and creative problem-solving — work your brain doesn’t do nearly as well while you’re focused on a task or absorbing external content.

Brief, intentional unstructured rest appears genuinely beneficial; extended, unrelieved boredom does not show the same benefit and may tip toward rumination. But within that range, the case for building small, deliberate pockets of true idleness into daily life is stronger than the old instinct to treat rest as wasted time would suggest.
